How Does PEMF Work?

Pulsed Electro-Magnetic Field (PEMF) therapy is a procedure that utilizes specialized technology to stimulate cells, addressing cellular dysfunction while supporting the patients’ overall health.

Dr. Love's clinic use Curatron's highest grade of clinical technology from Israel.  Curatron PEMF systems have the power to fully penetrate the whole body by delivering deep electromagnetic stimulation with superior speed of induction, while changing frequencies every couple of minutes to avoid body adaptation.

By inducing a mild electrical magnetic current into damaged cells.  PEMF therapy slows or stops the release of pain and inflammatory mediators, increases blood flow of the cells, and re-establishes normal cell interaction. With reduced inflammation, pain decreases, energy increases, and FASTER tissue healing occurs.

Pulsed electromagnetic frequency (PEMF) is most commonly known to be used as a modality in the field of orthopedics for the treatment of non-union fractures, failed fusions, improves quality and speeds up the bonding process to artificial implants (osseo-integration ) and anchors the implant firmly into place.  (hips, knee and dental implants). Implants are made with medical titanium materials which are non-ferromagnetic which allows safe treatment with PEMF therapy.  PEMF therapy will not cause any form of magnetizing or temperature increase of any sort in the titanium implant.

With over 40 years of clinical studies, researchers suggest that the pulsed signal in PEMF activates the body’s chemistry to heal more rapidly.

Having healthy cells is vital to your overall health and well-being. By restoring the body’s natural electro-magnetic energy through PEMF therapy, cell metabolism is boosted, blood cells are regenerated, circulation is improved, oxygen carrying capacity is increased and inflammation is reduced.

PEMF provides stunning regenerative effects because these magnetic fields result in cells generating so much naturally derived energy that they are able to heal themselves. Cellular energy production is increased and  oxidative stress is decreased.

PEMF therapy can prove to provide positive results for various conditions. Physicians around the world are observing improvements in patients’ energy levels and feelings of being ‘recharged’ when they are treated with PEMF. They also report the absorption of nutrients increased; detoxification is enhanced; and emotional health is improved.

Additionally, physicians are also reporting that patients with extremely bad blood values, severe gut or joint inflammations and have high acidity, benefit greatly from PEMF therapy. Their most powerful observation is the increased activity, size and movement of the white blood cells. PEMF improves circulation so the conversion of nutrients and oxygen inside the body can occur at optimum performance.

With PEMF, the immune system also becomes healthier; the nervous system relaxes; bones and joints become stronger; and liver, kidneys and colon can rid themselves of impurities thus detoxifying the body. PEMF Therapy can reduce pain and improve the quality of your life by allowing your body to function as it was designed to do.

Reported Benefits of PEMF Therapy:

Reduced pain
Reduced inflammation
Increased range of motion
Faster functional recovery

Stimulates fracture repair
Reduced muscle loss after surgery
Increased tensile strength in ligaments
Faster healing of skin wounds
Enhanced capillary formation
Accelerated nerve regeneration
Reduced tissue necrosis

What We Treat with PEMF Therapy

PEMF therapy up-regulates the body’s functions and optimizes the body’s ability to heal itself. Improvements can be seen in the following:

Bones, joint, muscles: arthritis, sprains, bursitis, osteoporosis, post-surgical wound healing, and jaw/tooth disease

Organs: Heart, lungs, liver, kidney, prostate, uterus, etc.

Brain: Memory, concentration, depression, Parkinson’s, ADHD, and mental focus

Unlike other systems that produce extremely weak magnetic fields, a major advantage of our systems is their enhanced magnetic field strength with up to 10,000 gauss.  This is powerful which substantially improves treatment results and is one of the most powerful PEMF modality in Edmonton.

Pain management and inflammation

PEMF therapy has shown to be effective at reducing pain both in the short-term and long-term. The ways by which PEMF therapy relieves pain include pain blocking, decreasing inflammation, increasing cellular flexibility, increasing blood and lymph circulation and increasing tissue oxygenation, helping with tissue regeneration, decreasing nerve irritability, improving nerve recovery and decreasing overactive immune responses. PEMFs work synergistically with almost all other treatment approaches to help with pain and heal tissue. The body reacts to the PEMF signal to produce all these actions. Moreover, the body decides how it will respond, which is why PEMFs are so safe and work in so many different ways to help with pain management.

PEMFs have major advantages over most other pain management approaches because of their pain-relieving capability, and their documented effectiveness.

PEMF therapy treats the cellular source of swelling by recharging the cells with a mild electromagnetic current. This stops the release of pain and inflammatory mediators, reduces inflammatory fluids and allows an increase in blood flow, therefore increasing oxygen intake. This helps the cells heal faster with less swelling, pain and bruising, providing faster functional recovery.

Adenosine is a molecule that has been called a "guardian angel" in human disease. Working through the adenosine receptor (AR), adenosine plays a key role in controlling inflammation.  A2A receptors have a complex relationship with immune and inflammatory processes.  Under normal conditions, acute inflammation-producing molecules naturally stimulate the A2A receptor to prevent or decrease inflammation.

Low adenosine production means these receptors don't work as they should, and chronic inflammation can result.   PEMFs increase adenosine and stimulate A2A receptors which, in turn, increase production of adenosine and allow for its more efficient functioning.  The end result is a larger anti-inflammatory response than pain medications are capable of achieving, without side-effects, desentization, or receptor resistance.

BLOOD CIRCULATION AND LYMPHATIC VESSELS

As PEMF therapy mechanically stimulates blood vessels and blood flow, the blood vessels pump blood and oxygen into the cells. Simultaneously, PEMF therapy mechanically stimulates the lymphatic vessels and waste products are hauled away from the cells more efficiently. PEMF therapy supports immune health by mechanically stimulating lymphatic drainage and blood flow.

Cellular Growth and Repair

The many intra/inter cellular processes and activity stimulated by PEMF therapy lead to faster cellular and tissue regeneration. This fact is shown by the results of many studies on a variety of tissues, including bones, spine, cartilage, intestines, blood vessels, nerves, brain and muscles.

detoxification

PEMF restores and enhances the efficiency of the cells mitochondria and production of ATP, the vital element for charging up the cell walls. When sufficiently charged, the cell will then expel toxins and waste products more efficiently. Cellular pH alkalinity increases allowing for better oxygen uptake and suppression of harmful toxins and infection.

PEMF stimulation to optimized Physical Health and Prolonged

PEMF is becoming increasingly recognized in the realm of sports and physical activity for its profound benefits in enhancing performance, accelerating recovery and preventing injuries.

By improving circulation, enhancing tissue oxygenation and promoting the body's natural healing processes. PEMF also increases the production of ATP which is fuel for the mitochondria.  Russian Olympic athletes have been utilizing the benefits of PEMF since the early 1990s.

BONE GROWTH STIMULATION EXPEDITES FRACTURE HEALING

PEMF enhances the electrical polarity by inducing an electrical field at the fracture site which supports the natural healing process and stimulates fracture repair. PEMF bone growth stimulation generates a time varying magnetic field within the body. Thus, the electric potential created by PEMF stimulates fracture healing.

Anti-aging Benefits of PEmf

1. Cellular Bioenergetics & Mitochondrial Health (Core of Aging Biology)

Studies show PEMF can:

  • Preserve mitochondrial membrane potential (Δψm)

  • Reduce oxidative stress

  • Improve ATP production

  • Protect cells from oxidative or inflammatory injury

These effects have been demonstrated in:

  • Neurons

  • Microglia

  • Fibroblasts

  • Mesenchymal stem cells

Why this matters for aging:
Loss of mitochondrial potential, rising ROS, and impaired ATP generation are central drivers of cellular aging. Anything that preserves Δψm and reduces oxidative load is, by definition, acting on an anti-aging axis.

PEMF has documented effects on mitochondrial function consistent with mechanisms targeted by recognized anti-aging strategies.

2. Membrane Potential, Ion Channel Modulation & Cell Signaling

PEMF has been shown to:

  • Influence transmembrane electrical potential

  • Modulate voltage-gated calcium channels

  • Optimize ion flux (Ca²⁺, Na⁺, K⁺)

  • Trigger downstream pro-repair pathways (ERK, CREB, BDNF, nitric oxide balance)

Why this matters for aging:

Aging is associated with:

  • Loss of membrane potential

  • Calcium dysregulation

  • Impaired signaling cascades

  • Reduced cellular responsiveness

PEMF directly modulates these systems — again, a biologically grounded anti-aging mechanism.

3. Tissue Repair, Regeneration & Collagen Remodeling

PEMF has demonstrated benefits in:

  • Wound healing

  • Fibroblast activity

  • Collagen synthesis

  • ECM remodeling

  • Reduced chronic inflammation

Clinical studies in humans have shown:

  • Improved skin laxity

  • Reduced wrinkles

  • Smoother texture

  • Enhanced microcirculation

  • Better tissue oxygenation

Why this matters:
These findings align with visible, measurable anti-aging outcomes, particularly in skin — one of the easiest tissues to evaluate.

4. Inflammation & Immune Modulation

PEMF can:

  • Lower pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6)

  • Increase anti-inflammatory markers

  • Improve immune response under stress

  • Reduce nitric oxide overload

  • Modulate microglial activation

  • Enhance T-cell proliferation in vitro (young & elderly donors)

Chronic inflammation (“inflammaging”) is a central hallmark of aging.

PEMF’s anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects support a credible anti-aging role.

5. Stem Cell Modulation & Regenerative Signaling

Studies show PEMF can:

  • Increase stem cell proliferation

  • Increase chondrogenic & osteogenic differentiation

  • Enhance stem cell survival under oxidative stress

  • Improve mobilization of repair cells

Why this matters:

Stem cell exhaustion is one of the 9 Hallmarks of Aging.

Any modality that supports stem cell function is relevant to anti-aging.

Based on current evidence, pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy demonstrates multiple cellular and physiological effects—improved mitochondrial function, reduced oxidative stress, modulation of ion channels, enhanced tissue repair, and immune/inflammatory regulation—that align with recognized mechanisms of aging.
